SST's wild ride!

After visiting Theadore Roosevelt National Park we were heading for Dickinson North Dakota. It started to rain and then the hail hit us. Before we new it we were skating on 4" of hail! On I-94

Took the first exit I could find and the streets had flooded from the hail clogging the storm sewers. Causing low lying roads to have 1-2 ft of standing water. Flooding to my distributor several times, some how was able to keep it running until finding a empty carwash bay to duck into.

I cleaned this morning and checked things out, looks like we are good to go

We took off from Dickinson South Dakota this morning to tour the
North unit of the Theadore Roosevelt National Park.
We were almost there and the SST lost fire! Pulled off the road and checked spark, nothing but had power to the HEI. Few minutes later it fired up! Made it to the park entrance and it died again. This time I changed the module and it fired again.
Made it about 4 miles up in the Park and down she went again,
this time I changed the the cap, rotor and coil pack. I carry spares!
Made it out of the park and 8 miles down the road, bang lost fire again!!
Called Napa store and ordered a new HEI distributor!
Tow truck showed up 3.5 hrs later and took us to the hotel in Watford North Dakota, parts should be here in the morning.
Always an adventure, but always could have been worse!

I wanted to ask you where you got the steel you've got on SST's firewall? The mirrored plastic I have on mine is losing is mirroring off the back and I rather like the look of what you've got on yours. It's like a diamond plate, but very much nicer.

Anyway, hope you make it back to MI safely. We blasted over to Devil's Tower and only hit a little rain near Cheyenne on our way back to Denver on Sunday. Ivy ran perfectly, except for that one little fan relay incident, 1411 miles total for the trip, with two 500+ mile runs to bookend it.

Well we are at the hotel now so maybe I can get into it a little deeper.

The stainless steel firewall is 12 ga that I engine turned using a drill press.

Bill are you planning on going to Nationals, I have a sheet of 316L Stainless 1/8 inch x 18 inch x 24 inch that would make a great firewall and it can be polished to look like chrome.

Thanks for the offer Fred. I'd take you up on it but for two things:

First, I'm not going to nationals (I don't trailer and after Rapid City, I don't have the PTO to make another long driving trip)
Second, my firewall is about 34" wide (it's a Tim Lyon's Okie Rod body).

I will probably look for some stainless around here (Denver). Maybe Windy will give me some instruction as to how I might achieve similar results. Chuck used a mirrored piece of plexiglass and the mirroring is coming off the back in spots. Eventually, I either need to replace it with a better material or completely cover the firewall with stickers.
