Christopher Columbus was a courageous Portugese seafaring explorer who set out to achieve an Atlantic crossing in hopes of discovering a ‘new world.’ In the early morning hours of October 12, 1492, the lookout on his flagship, the Pinta, shouted, “Land ho” as they neared one of the Caribbean islands. In fact, Columbus never set foot on or even saw the continental United States. His four expeditions to the New World between 1492 and 1504 were focused exclusively on Caribbean islands and territories which are now Central America and South America.
Columbus Day is worth keeping and honoring because it was foundational to establishing a new nation by people who shared the core beliefs and the qualities of character that were also exhibited by Columbus. It could be said that Columbus Day is the holiday that commemorates the action that made the other American holidays possible.
