Gas Tank Needed?

Hi,
I'm getting ready for my first sustained start today on my T-Bucket but the Gods weren't with me.
I have a 350 sbc, slightly elevated cam and a 4 barrel. I hadn't bought a gas tank yet and thought I could stick the line in a gas container for this. I pulled the plugs and cranked to fill the reservoirs in the carb but nothing would pump up to the carb. I am assuming this was because of sticking the line in a gas container and not a sealed gas tank.
Is that a reasonable assumption or should I be looking elsewhere. I have a manual gas pump.

Your mechanical fuel pump should pull the gas out of the container, but it takes awhile. Why not carefully pour some gas into the float bowl(s) through the vent tube in order to get the engine to fire up? Also, if this is a new/newly rebuilt engine do you have enough gas to keep it running for 15-20 minutes at 2,000 RPM for cam break-in?

Like Bill said it will maybe take a little while to suck gas with a Mech pump....

You do not want the gas tank to be sealed up it will have to have a vent........

Do you have an electric pump you can use to prime the engine?......
