engine will not start

Post by 23Paddywagon »

I drove about 5 miles yesterday, parked for 3 hours, then returned home. I got about a mile down the road and the engine died. It turned over strong but does not start. I removed the air filter cover, there is a slight smell of gas but not what you expect if you pump it.
When I have time this afternoon I will check to see if the electric pump is working.
Any other ideas?

Well . . . it's got to have fuel and 'fire' to start. If fuel pump checks OK, look at fuel filter(s). Try pulling a plug wire and holding it close to the plug to see if a spark jumps the gap. Electronic ignition? How's the coil? Do things one at a time so you can isolate where the problem lies. :)

.
You don't say what kind of carburetor you have, some of them will have a filter internal
to the carb.

The problem was a loose wire from the battery to the alternator.
I took off the alternator to have the store bench check it and in the process saw the wire connected to the alternator broken at the nut.
The symptoms were a volt meter not registering correctly and eventually running down the battery.
I have been charging the battery while in the garage, that would keep me going for a while.
I really feel great now, i was so worried about traveling anywhere.
