Disc brake dust.

Before I drove to Tennessee, I had the brakes done on my Chevy pickup. They work fine but the calipers and pads (fronts) produce a huge amount of brake dust. Looks like hell, especially on a mag wheel. Fat Pat, what is the deal?

I am not Fat Pat but I have had the same problem on several cars---the problem - the cheap brake pads!!!! Switch to ceramics and Presto Zippo---the problem is not gone but it is MUCH reduced!!!!!!!

Am I right FP?

Thanks Cornshuck!! Never thought about poor quality pads. I figured they were all about the same.

Ford issued a technical service bulletin regarding "brake dust" on wheels a few years back. The tsb basically said that the dust on wheels was picked from the highway not from the pads. Static electricity was a partial blame for wheels collecting the dust. I was A Ford service manager for quite a few years and had a lot of customers concerned about the dust and wanted their brake linings checked for wear. I kept a copy of the TSB around to show the customers the reason for the dust. The difference of brake pad material may affect the amount of dust build up.

Kirk, while I'm NOT doubting your word, I too had the same issue with my '99 Ford F-150 and I switched to ceramic pads ( for when I towed an enclosed car trailer) and I've not had dirty wheels since doing that and I switched at least 12 years ago.
