Bear with me Mark till I get that breather and air filter, and I'll have a much better feel. But when I tested it last night, I was honestly not prepared for how quiet it was. Amazon tells me the stuff shipped and I should have it between next Tuesday and next Friday. (Sheesh!)
I hope to anchor this beast to the floor tonight after work. I got the anti-vibration pads and wedge anchors they recommend, now just have to see if I can drill 5" deep holes in my concrete without a hammer drill. I got a long 3/8 masonry bit, so we'll see. Once I get this done, it's back to the hot rod!
Got the vibration pads and wedge anchors in last night. Taking tomorrow off, so will have a 4 day weekend to work on the t bucket, but no compressed air till I get the air filter and oil breather. Got the last brass fitting this morning I need to deliver air to my system, but I'm just making do. Eventually that will get changed out for bigger stuff.
Frank, maybe i'm all wet but that 2" round thing at the top of the compressor cylinder (right hand side in the video) is the air intake filter. It just screws in.
Right. Actually it's 3" with 1/2" pipe thread connector. I did not get one with the compressor last Sunday, so ordered this last Monday. It came today, along with the oil breather.
Had a friend who's moving bring over 5 old boat trailer a few weekends ago before we had snow. One had been converted into a flat deck utility trailer, so I figured that would be prefect to move the chassis around easily. Then we got 22" of snow...
I had already rebuilt the hubs, and was waiting on new wheels & tires coming FedEx, and they come Saturday morning. (I had expected them sometime later this week.) So I dig the trailer out, finish up the hubs (preloading, etc.), get the new tires on and roll it out and back it into the space I shoveled so I can easily get at it.
This morning I shaped my new radius rod and tranny tab brackets. After lunch I'm running up to NAPA for more stuff, then come home and work on the chassis some if I'm lucky. I could have got a lot more done the last few days if I hadn't been moving so much snow. Takes a lot out of me, but probably is good too!
Back to the compressor. Right from when I first got it hooked up, it seemed "touchy." I.e., it wouldn't start right off when I turned it on. I did the break-in procedure (running, all valves open for at least 30 minutes), then closed all the valves to let it build pressure. It is supposed to max out at 135, but ran up to 150, then the overflow valve started bleeding off air, and it reached equilibrium around 90, bleeding off air still, and running. I wanted to change the outlet stuff to a 1/2" shut off valve I found in my air stuff, and a better pressure regulator, 3/8" instead of 1/4. This required some new brass adapters, but reduced the overall amount of fittings. So after doing that, I tried it again, and the same thing happened. So I called Campbell Hausfeld, answered a few questions, and to make a long story short, they are sending me a new pre-switch. That includes all the pieces giving me trouble. While I'm not happy having these problems, I can't say enough about how helpful and friendly the folks at Campbell Hausfeld have been. My new switch is on the way, plus a bigger air filter (the one that should have come with it to begin with).
What's next? I intend to clean the chassis up, maybe at the local car wash to begin with, and smooth over some welds with JB Weld. I need to install cups in the Jag hub George sent me and get that baby rebuilt and set. There's a Jag guy locally that has the tools to set load and such on old hubs. Might cost me 50, 60 bucks. We'll see. Other things I can do with limited cash are clean up and finish all the oak on the stake rack. I have a few things to do on the seats before they go to an upholster someday in the future. Plenty to do, not a lot of time, and VERY little cash!
You can use a reciprocating saw with an excellent steel blade and probably take less time than I did with just a cut-off wheel on my 4.5" angle grinder. Then I drill the holes (5/8" for the radius rod brackets, 1/2" for the tranny tabs) so I can bolt them together and clamp them down and make two pieces that are the same shape. I make templates of 1/4" luan from the CCR plans I have, and use those as a guide, then shape the pieces with a grinding wheel on my 4.5" angle grinder. I do a bit of finish work with my bench grinder, then sand them with an 80 grit belt with my belt sander. They still need a bit of finishing, but really could be welded on like they are. I made them from 3/8" steel plate, exactly what my CCR plans call for. Thankfully that's it. I think...
Thanks, good info. I work mostly with aluminum, so I'm not familiar with the techniques for fabricating from steel plate. Yep, those brackets look like they're ready to be welded. Good luck with the build!
