Alternator choices?

In work on an early Bird kit that's been kicking around to multiple owners, and is finally being built and it's problems worked out.

Thinking I'd like to find a compact, internally regulated alternator to mount to the old slant six up front, but still be something I can find in Wayland, Mo. if it goes dead.

Any recommendations?

Not a compact, but it is hard to beat the GM mid 70s 3 wire alternator. They are inexpensive, and every parts store has them.

There is a small alternator that I think is a Nipendenso that is used by forklifts, small tractors, lawn mowers etc. You would need to get an internal regulator that just bolts on and wires in, to make it a one wire set up. There is also a 121D Delco which is a smaller alternator but would also have to be converted to a one wire. If there is a shop around you that does starter/alternator repairs they can definitely hook you up

This is what my dad and I run. They were originally for Toyota and Hyster forklifts and were 35 amps, but you can get them up to 60 amps which is what is on mine. There are several suppliers on Ebay (mine came from DB Electrical) and you can get them with a chrome case. I had to drill out the top mounting holes and fabbed an adjustable mount on the bottom. These are definitely smaller than a Chevy Delco Unit.

If you want something that you know you can pretty much always get parts for, as suggested go with the one-wore Delco unit. You can get a low mount that gets it out of the way.

Rolla and Ben......Thanks loads for that, and Ben's pic. I'm liking the N/D size and how it tucks in there close. There is a local shop that I'll have to check out.

I kinda like the idea of the Delco unit, as those parts could be gotten just about anywhere, but that compact N/D unit is sure tickling my fancy.
