Removable dash?

Okay, I get it now. I needed to look at the 1st pic posted not the 2nd!

So Bob, what does the screw fasten too? Just threads made in glass. or is that a metal body? I'm gonna need something behind mine to attach it to so it's easy to come out. My wiring needs to get cleaned up too, and it would be relatively easy to do with a removable dash.

It is old hand laid up thick fiberglass. A metal nut was glassed in place to receive the two machine screws.

I did much the same as Bob but used 1/8" aluminum diamond plate and fastened it to the cutout fiberglass dash with stainless socket head bolts and locknuts.

I gotta tell ya, I like Bob's idea of embedding a nut in glass and then just using machine screws! I get a ways to go to get there, but she's coming right along. Me and the puppy are going down to work on stuff right now!

There is a product called a nutsert, which you install like a pop rivit and can be used with wood, fiberglass, metal, etc. depending on the thickness of your material. When installed, they provide a machine thread and come in amll to large thread diameters.. They are easy to install and work extremely well! IF using them with fiberglass I would use a washer to spread the clamped load over a larger surface, but that is just my opinion ..

Harbor Freight sell the whole kit cheap including the installation tool and an assortment of sizes.

Actually Mike, Big Bill is right, there is a very inexpensive assortment through Harbor Freight and many local harware stores carry them. You don't actually have to sue the tool to cripm them. You can insert the correct size screw in them and crimp them in place. On the larger diameters it is actually easier to use an impact or something of that type to crimp them ..
