Transmission cooler

Got the transmission in now I would like to know what the best transmission cooler people has found to run these t buckets. I would prefer to mount the aluminum cylindrical back along the frame beside the transmission if those seem to work pretty good. Any input would be greatly appreciated thank you.

I started out with the finned aluminum cylinder mounted parallel with the frame right ahead of my tranny crossmember. I have a 3000 stall converter and idle at 800-900. I got curious about tranny temperature and installed a temp gauge with the sender in the tranny pan. I found that tranny temp was staying in the high side of the desirable range (using TCI's chart http://www.tciauto.com/tc/trans-life-expectancy) most of the time, but on warmer days in stop and go traffic it was getting into the 250-260 range.

I wasn't comfortable with that, so changed out to this cooler set-up... http://www.summitracing.com/parts/der-15950. I have the fan on a relay and toggle switch rather than using the temp switch, as I wanted to have more control of when the fan is on. It is mounted on the back of the body just above the pinion on my Jag pumpkin. Work's great! I very rarely have to turn on the fan, which I do when the temp approaches 200.

Thanks for the link. After spending all the money on a nice transmission and stall converter I sure don't want to burn it up or cause it harm. Do you see any reason why I wouldn't be able to mount that set up on the inside of frame rail across from transmission? Are you running a 10 gallon gas tank?

u can mount it anywhere it can get good air movement. i also used the finned one with multi S turns and attached to underside of body floor with about a 2" spacer for air flow all around. worked ok but i never took a temp either..

Hi Lee, i bought the aluminum finned cooler, it is 18"s they called it a double pass, was planning on putting it under the body bout 2 ft away from the trans. i would think those coolers with a fan on them would work better but i didnt know of anyplace i could hide it, didnt want it in front of the radiator. any suggestions before i put it on?

I run the finned aluminum coolers on both our buckets. I mounted them under the floor with a 3 inch spacer made out of perferated metal so they get more air flow. I don't have a temp gauge so I don't know how hot it runs.

Hi Keith, i didnt think of that but a spacer is a good idea, letting the air go around on all sides, i will defantly do that when i mount it, thanks

A B&M cooler is a good one. It is compact and has threaded bosses for fittings. The slant flow pattern is excellent. It is available both black and polished loomnum. I mounted mine using MSD shock mounts under the body.

I second the B&M coolers. The threaded connections along with AN type connectors can insure that you don't end up in a bath of automatic fluid some afternoon. They are available in a lot of different sizes and cooler ratings plus the mounting panels on them make it easy to come up with a mounting system that will work in your car. I also use the same coolers on some of the sports cars that I have worked on as engine oil coolers. While I doubt that anyone with a T-Bucket needs engine oil cooling - well you just never know do you?
