brake fluid and master cylinder

i have been trying to run my brake lines and master cylinder. everything is hooked up, (kit from speedway) i havent bled my lines yet but tonight when i took the top off of MC to look at fluid, it had a milky type substance floating. the front part of the MC was clean and clear. the reason i was looking at the fluid in the first place was they had a little white substance floating around in it, i was looking to see if it was still in. so does anyone have a clue to what the milky substance is? do i have to empty the MC and try to blow out the lines and remount everything? thanks for any help!

You said in this post that you have not bled the lines so I think if you dump the MC then you should be OK..I supposed that the white stuff is some assembly oil & if it is floating it did not get any father in to you system....You may very well be able to just skim off the white......Did you bench bled the MC? When did you put the brake fluid in the MC?

Water will not cause a milky look with brake fluid ... I agree it must be some kind of oil or grease.

Did you happen any oil when you were flaring the lines, may have been in the line.

well you basicly are all correct, for starters, i did not flare the lines, i bought the brake kit from speedway, lines came all pre bent. i did buy some SS braided lines for the back. i did say i havent bled the lines yet but i have pumped the pedal a lot trying to check connections for leaks and to see where the leak was coming from, so i probably do have fluid in the lines already. i will try to bleed the lines tomorrow, but before i do, i will check the MC to see if any of the stuff is still floating on top. it does look more like a oil residue than a milky type substance. i may dissconnect the MC and all the lines, and just blow them out with air, and re bench bleed the MC and just start over.

My brake lines are driving me crazy. Bought a good flaring tool thought all looked good and have been fighting leaks.

I know the issue you are fighting, I have been making brake lines for 30+ years and it seems that the newer material we are getting now is not what it was in the past. I can go to make the double flare and beyond belief it looks like the tooling moved, make another and zero problems. Two things I would recommend if you haven't already done so - first, make sure all of your fittings are the correct size. It's real easy to get SAE and Metric brake fittings mixed up. They will thread together without a problem, but they will leak on you. Second, I have found that I can't get away from using Teflon tape on each connection - about 3 wraps does the trick. I am not sure if it is related to the metal or the way the threads are cut but it does take care of the leak issue.

Well so far so good just got the last leak taken care of bled all four wheels and so far so good no drips or seaps. I have a rock hard pedal. Hopefully tomorrow when I go out to check it and pump it a few more times it will still stay dry and I can check this one off my list.
