Reversed Corvair Steering Box Issue

Post by Gene »

Hello all, my first post here.

I own a Total Performance T-Bucket which has a lot of play in the steering wheel....about six inches. This makes it unsafe to drive.

I crawled under the vehicle an tried to turn in the slotted adjustment screw on the box, but it was already just about all the way in.

I purchased the box a couple of years ago from Speedway and that's the way it came....six inches of play with minimal adjustment ability.

Anyone know of any other way to reduce the play on the steering wheel?

Also, Speedway bought Total Performance a few years ago and discontinued Total's connector from the steering shaft to the steering box and went with their own swivel adapter. Therefore, if I need to reduce the play in the wheel, I'll probably have to buy not only a new box, but also a new steering shaft, column and adapters. Very expensive. Anyone know if someone out there sells an adapter to mate the new box with the old steering shaft and column?

Thanks....

Some company in San Jose builds/rebuilds Corvair boxes. That company is "STRAIGHTLINE STEERING"

The thing you need to do is first start at the wheels and make sure every thing in the steering is TIGHT....including the Wheel bearings and the King Pins as well as all of the steering rod ends and then look at what you need to change on the Corvair Box.

I know I am not answering you questions but these little cars can not stand any loose parts in the steering.

Ron Pope one of our sponsors here has some Reversed Corvair boxes that he will sell you and he will make you just about any part you will need for your steering......Ron Pope Motorsports up at the top of this page....

Tighten up the parts and talk to Ron...

Thanks guys.
It's the box. No question.

A place called " Clark's Corvair " sells all the parts needed to rebuild if you want.

Just another option.

I've used them, myself. Good people.
I reversed a gearbox, using instructions from the 'net, and a rebuild kit from Clark's. Haven't got it mounted up yet, but confidence is high.

Hello again, guys.
I'm wondering if I should replace the bad steering box with either a 16:1 ratio or a 20:1 ratio.
I understand the difference and how both affect steering.

I'm leaning toward the 16:1. I realize it will be a little harder to turn in a car where all of the weight is up front (blown 454), but I don't want to have to make a bunch of turns on the steering wheel just to turn the car around.

Do you have any recommendation as far as which to get for a T-Bucket?

Thanks for your help.

I can't relate to the different ratios in a Corvair box, since I am running a Vega box with cross-steer. What I can tell you is that T-buckets are so light steering effort is minimal anyway, and power steering would be overkill! A little quicker ratio would be a good thing in my opinion, but, some of you guys with the Corvair boxes can answer that better than I. :D

I would go for the quicker steering as well. I have a Vega box too and as far as I know, it can't be changed.
T-buckets make people smile.
