battery charging?

I put in a new battery last month (6/2018), I have a 5 speed and have ran it up to 45 mph in 1st gear and shifted directly to 4th. After doing this for a week my battery would not turn over the engine to start it. I push started it and got home ok. I deliberately ran it at high RPM's going home. It sat for a while in the garage, and started up about 5 hours later.
My question, would shifting directly to 4th and chugging along in fourth at about 45 mph not charge the battery sufficiently?

I doubt that's the problem; I'm guessing a small current leak when the ignition is off. I solved a similar situation with a battery cutoff switch. Works like a charm! Also, when my bucket is going to be idle for awhile, I put a trickle battery charger on it.

Bill my very well be right, but to answer your question..... An alternator puts out considerably
less at idle then it does at say 2000 rpm. So what was the RPM when you say "chugging along"?

Bill, I do have a cut off switch, but since I drive it all the time I only use it when working on the electric system.
As to the rpm, I believe it is running about 2-3 grand.

Mine is right behind the passenger seat, and I switch it off whenever I park the bucket.

That should be plenty of rpm if the alternator has not failed. If you have a meter, measure
the battery voltage at 1000 rpm and 2000 rpm. Should be about 14.5 volts.

Yea the wife hasn't been substituting as much this years, so the money hasn't been available.
