Hot starts

I'm having an issue with hot starts from my SB Chevy engine. It's a mild 350 ci Gen 1 engine with conventional water pump, electric cooling fan, etc. This seems to have developed recently, which I don't understand. I know Chevy engines are notorious for this problem, and several remedies are out there, including replacing the starter-mounted solenoid with a remote mount, Ford-style solenoid. So far it starts every time, but when I have driven awhile and then stopped, restarting sounds like a weak battery, and the battery is almost brand new. Any suggestions?

How old is the starter, and have you checked the timing. If the starter is in good condition and the timing is correct trying wrapping the starter in a thermo blanket, Speedway and Summit Racing will have the. I the starter is older and is a stock started you may want to replace it with a High Torque starter, Speedway , Jegs and Summit are good suppliers.

Since this is a new problem, what has changed? Anything besides the new distributor?

I assume you have checked your connections, try measuring the resistance or voltage
drop across the positive and negative sides. Is the battery is getting weak, maybe have
it tested?

What size is your positive battery cable?

Thanks for the suggestions. Windy sent me a link to an article that pretty well nailed my problem. Several months ago I changed out my positive battery cable because the battery end was all buggered up. I replaced it (#2 AWG) with a 4 AWG cable, thinking that would be sufficient for my needs. WRONG! I have purchased a new 2 AWG cable and will install it as soon as I get the chance. I'll give a final report after that happens.

I purchased a new 02 AWG positive battery cable from Battery Cables USA. Great company, quality product. Went for a nice cruise with a planned stop to check the performance of the starter when the engine is hot. The cable worked flawlessly, and hot starts are no longer a problem. When hot, my starter now spins like a new one. Thanks again, Windy, for the article.
