Electric Steering

So we had a nice day in NC, yesterday and Laurie and I took a drive around the lake. My hidden agenda was to stop at two hot rod shops to discuss my upcoming steering column change. I want the steering wheel out of my lap and I want to add self-cancelling turn signals! (I am doing this so Emerson can no longer tell me that my blinker was turned on for 80miles! ).

Interestingly enough, both shop owners brought up "Electric Steering". I had planned to replace the steering column now and move to R&P steering at some time in the future. (Just like all the cool kids in the NTBA!) My sense that tucking the electric motor under the very narrow dash would be the challenge for putting electric steering in a T-Bucket. The other alternative is to have the electric motor forward of the firewall, which would look odd!

So have any of you put electric steering in? Are any of you thinking about electric steering? I would love to hear your thoughts!

Mark I did look at that before I made the change to the Half Rack and I did not like the idea of trying to hide the steering box. It just did not give me a warm & fuzzy feeling...But that is just me.....

Mike - I understand your point! If I could not hide the electric motor under the dash, I will go back to the half rack.

- Do you find an improvement in low speed steering in parking lots/car shows with the half rack?

Yes I do find it very good.........As I have said before once you raise the column up out of your lap you will find it will turn even at slow speed much better..........That seeringwheel is just way to low for my .02 worth (it may not be worth that much)....

I would remount the column at the same time as I put on the half rack, and yes I always say just make one change at a time, but in your case you need to make it all fit at one time......

I like the one thing at a time approach, unless there is some advantage to doing the R&P when I move the column up.

It is your car............now here comes the but, in this case it's kinda all the same "one" thing at a time approach. Try it you will like it.......
