Well, Greg Spreen finally got my 383 (which is actually a 390 now) truck engine rebuilt w/a forged crank this time. I went to Boerne today in my brother's shop truck to pick it up. He blew everything apart and put in new cam, rod & main bearings; honed the cylinders & installed gapless rings; rebuilt the Trick Flow alum. heads w/new seals; installed a new 4340 forged crank (Scat I think) w/new ARP main bolts; internally balanced the crank w/new flexplate & harmonic balancer (old engine was externally balanced which is the leading cause of broken cranks according to Greg).
Greg called me several days before the pick up to suggest making some changes. 1) He wanted me to 86 the old stock alum. GM intake & replace it w/a Wieand intake. I asked if he could find an Edelbrock manifold w/DuraShine finish; he called me back the next day & said that he had found one that was the same height as the stock manifold. 2) He went through my Pertronix distributor & found out that it had cratered. He had an Accel HEI that he had had for quite some time (still new in the box) that retailed for over $200.00 & would sell it for $150.00 (it also was set up w/the correct curve for my engine). I asked him how the Accel would compare to an MSD & he said it used the same parts. 3) He also recommended that I put on a pair of 'block hugger' exhaust headers. I forgot to get the #, but I will have to wait to a later date. I can put up w/the stock cast iron for now. I've got to get my truck back on the road. I've been driving the Olds, Javlin & T, all w/antique plates, since last February which is not allowed for daily drivers. The local police have been nice, never giving me a problem. It may be since my niece married one of the Constables that works our area. I give the Lord a lot of credit for that.
Here are 4 pics that I took after getting the engine unloaded this afternoon. After I get the engine broken in I'm going to put my original flamed valve covers (for my T) on. I originally buffed them out, then took them to Show-n-Go & Wayne K. put 'Trick Hemi Orange' powder coat in the flame grooves (the color is identical to the Chevy orange Greg applied to the block) & then chromed the valve covers. When you chrome polished alum. it equals the deep rich shine that Edelbrock has come up w/in this DuraShine process. The first time I saw this finish was on Dugin's dual quad on his '34 Fordor Sedan Delivery. I don't think I'll ever polish another manifold w/this DuraShine process available. The best thing about this is that I think it's the last time I'm going to have to put 'Humtey Dumpty' back together again. John

Looks like a really stout setup there. you didn't mention if your cam is roller or flat tappet, if the latter, make sure you break it in with oils high in zinc or get a zinc additive. Actually zinc helps all bearing surfaces so in my mind any motor should be broke in with it.
Good luck.
Good luck.

Yes, it does have a Trick Flow roller cam w/Comp Pro Magnum roller rockers as recommended by Trick Flow. This engine already had 25,000 miles on it when the crank broke. There's a long history to previous problems & break downs. I'll take credit to the 2 major 'bads'. 1) I used 1:6 roller rockers on the original build; 2) I bought a rotating assembly that had a cast crank. I built the original engine & had no problems till it started breaking valve springs. Long story made short, after having to replace the L. head, that Trick Flow does NOT recommend using a cam/roller rockers that exceeds a .500 lift. Therefore, I'll NEVER use 1:6 rockers on a SBC again. The second 'bad' is that I didn't pay an extra couple of hundred dollars to get a forged crank. When I called Greg about the rebuilt he told me that 25,000 miles was usually all one can get out of cast cranks.
And yes, he filled the crank case w/COMP SAE 10W-30 BREAK-IN OIL ZDDP ENHANCED. He wants me to drive it normally around town for a hundred miles & then drain it all out & put a new filter on. I'll put in Mobil 1 15W-50. I'm really looking forward to getting my truck back on the road. John
