Chassis coating

I'm just thinking ahead here.

I've used POR-15 in the past, and in part because of the re-coat procedure, am not a fan. Nevertheless I know a lot of folks use this stuff. To do it on an open chassis like our hot rods, you need to coat it with a UV resistant top coat which should then be coated with clear. If a quart per coat will do me, that's around 150 bucks.

On the other hand I've also used an industrial two part epoxy primer from Sherwin Wms on trailer chassis' and like it, but can only get it in two gallon kits for a bit over 100 bucks. Of course, then it needs to be top coated.

Alternatively, I could just do it with Rustoleum, which I have used on a number of old trailers I've renovated and have always had great results with. That might cost me 50 bucks.

Powder coating is just gonna be out of my price range.

For parts that take a real beating, high heat, road salts, and expansion from heating and cooling it is hard to beat powder coating. This exhaust and old Cherry Bomb shorty mufflers have seen almost 20 years of service.

Well . . . There's always the John Deere tractor black from your local farm & home store; I think this is what Toolman Taylor in Texas uses on his bucket, and you can't beat the price!

Re-build your chassis and use stainless, then polish it and use Wenol or Mothers....no need for further protection or powder coating or Por-15!

Yuk, yuk, yuk is right Lug. It's enough for me to just look at pulling this hot rod apart, let alone rebuilding the chassis. There will be some other changes though that will insure it doesn't look like it does now.

I had my frame and rear end housing powder coated for $250 ... it was all brand new steel so they didn't have to do any prep type work other than degrease. The powder coating has held up for over 5 years.

It will hold up for 20+ years, what you did is top flight IMHO.
