Doors?

Looking at the t tonight, I figured I'd give a go at where to put a door. Figured seat would be at the back half of the door, more or less, so front half was floor. Most regular t's I look at have the door starting right behind the windshield posts. What do y'all think?

Got the big old rear meats off. Got my new drag link steel tubing today. Pulling apart my '68 Scout bucket seats for a re-do. A little here, a little there...

I think that far back it will be hard to swing feet in and out, I would move door forward and make it six inches longer than stock. I have done this and it works well.

Good point Bill, that's the kind of comment I was looking for. Keep the rear vertical and move the front just behind the windshield posts?

Gonna have some big doors I guess.

Am I best off to get original 23t hinges (like these: http://www.ebay.com/itm/FORD-MODEL-T-Op ... es&vxp=mtr), or buy strap hinges and fit them so I have good swing, then weld a strap between the hinge part on the door like the original ones? I'm not real sure my body (CCR stretched) is shaped like an original, so am not sure if the original hinges would even work.

i think u need the T hinge's.. the door is curved and the bottom hinge sticks out further to compensate.. so the
door opens straight. just make sure the door don't hit the rear tire.. and before u cut, glue, bondo, how ever u do it and piece of 1x3 or 1x4 to the inside and cut down the middle of it..

Gee Bill, I got the rear tires off, guess I'll have to put one of those beasts back on! Never thought of that, but I should be okay. Gonna move that rear line forward a tad anywho.

Hi Frank! Good to see you're back. I have 2 sets of budget hinges and latches kicking around somewhere. I decided to put a step on both sides instead of adding doors so I don't need them any more. If you're interested I can dig them out and give you a good deal.

First thing you need is a Model T hinge.

Then you need to mount that hinge to some square tube, and add flat parts with holes.


Do the same with the striker and latch

Cut holes in the body for the hinges to come through

Bondo those hinges and latches in place where they are to go, then glass over that.

Mark where the door is going to be cut at, with small drill holes, you might want to do this first.

Now before you cut make sure the body is bolted down to the frame. Then connect the drill holes with a cut off wheel.

This was the silver car that I built for myself quite a few years ago. Note how much bigger the doors are.


Now you can reach inside and open the door, and it is perfectly aligned. If you cut that door out forst you will have one heck of a time trying to align it. The hinge can be bought for a 1923 Ford roaster on Ebay for about $15.00.
