Ready to hit the road! Room booked, vacation...

Post by Toolman »

scheduled, and route mapped. My nephew Tristan and I are going to do another long cross country to the NATS!

Tristan just turned 17 a few days ago, not sure how many more Nats we'll be able to make together before jobs, girlfriends, and other interests take over his life but I know we have one more NATS scheduled. We'll cherish the memories forever. :)

the route is 3500 miles:
Going to drive from Dallas to Amarillo in one day (Saturday June 15th) 5hrs.
Amarillo to Las Vegas via I-40 (12.5 hrs - the longest day). Gotta drive the Vegas Strip!
Vegas to Carson City (8 hrs). Arrive Monday night and see our NTBA friends!
Spend the week at the Nats!!!
Leave Saturday Afternoon for Salt Lake City (8 hrs)
Salt Lake City to Lake City, Colorado by Sunday night.
Spend a few days with my boys, Cody and Michael.
Climb to the top of Uncompahgre Peak and scatter some of Robyn's ashes on the site I proposed to her 25 years ago.
Back to Amarillo (8.5 hrs)
Back to Dallas (5 hrs)

The route (round trip) is 200 miles.

I live 5 miles from hwy 50, then 90 miles, that will take me to the south end of Carson City.
Have to cross 2 summits of 7500'+, takes 2 hours.

A bit shorter for me this year.

I wish all of you safe travels, I won't be there this year as Diana is not able to walk and I won't leave her for the time it would take to make the trip (5000 miles). Each of you have a little fun for me and I will be thinking of you. Hope to see everyone next year. If she recovers enough to get around we may see some of you in Pigeon Forge, have to see what doctor says. If nothing else I may drive the Plymouth instead of the T but at least we could be there.
Been there, done that, hope to live long enough to do it all again.

We are going by way of Denver to drop off the dog and spent a couple of days with the grand kids. Plan on getting to Carson City on Sunday. Take one day off from the Nats to drive over to Nevada City, CA to visit my 93 year old dad. Will head back home, via Denver, the following Sunday. Not counting the trip over to Nevada City, we will book about 3800 miles round trip. Hmmm ... 3800 miles, avg 10 mpg pulling trailer, 380 gallons of gas @ avg $4.00 a gallon ... oh, my head hurts!

Last Nats, Tristan and I tracked the miles and gas very closely on the bucket. Drove 2551 miles and used 128.14 gallons -- almost 20 mpg and we where driving it hard every day. Not bad for 421 ci SBC. Gotta love the fuel injection and overdrive transmission.

Probably use a couple of hundred gallons this trip :) Think I'll put new tires all around this year and leave the t-bucket trailer at home. Travel light, eat well, see some sights, and best of all be with BUCKETHEADS. Can't wait to see my old friends and make a few new ones.

Love traveling to the NATS, great way to see the new and different places each year. If it weren't for the NATS, I probably would have never visted the Wright brothers museum, National Air mueseums, Drove the bucket all out for 5 laps on a Wheelan Nascar track in N. Carolina, stayed at the Chattanooga Train station or drove the Tail of the Dragon, parked on the main street of Tombstone, AZ in front of the Birdcage Saloon, gone to the beautiful church at the Air Force Academy,... just a host of other great activities and destinations!!
