Getting ready for the Carson City NATS

The new engine only has 300 miles, so didn't change the oil because it was clean and at the proper level. The 383's oil at 300 miles was low and dirty so I changed it. Big difference between the two engine builds, the 383 burning oil and had metal shavings hanging on the magnetic drain plug, the 427 not burning any oil and looking as clean as fresh oil. Put all my regular tools back in the T along with new registration and proof of insurance. Last couple of drives the new front tires seemed out of balance but I think it is from sitting so long. If it doesn't smooth out for the 100 mile drive to Carson City I'll get them balanced there. This is the first vacation in a year and I'm so tired I think when I hit the hotel I'll bag some uninterrupted sleep, as I haven't had that luxury for a year.

Good memory, went to the M/T radials for the front to buy 1/2" of ground clearance. That is what is good about these forums, someone has been there, done that. I haven't dealt with flat spots on tires that sit for long time since polyester plys in non radial tires. Thanks for the heads up on the M/T's.

But it won't haul an ice chest, chairs, umbrella, and a ton of groceries like your big block woody wagon. Unlike my 383, the 427 doesn't care much for the 1000~2000 rpm range, but at least isn't as temperamental as the high strung 355 that was in it before the 383. The G-Tech was dead on for the 355, displaying a 10.8 for the 1/4 backed up by a 10.8 @ 132 mph at Sacramento Raceway. Never ran the track with the 383, but with 66 hp less, the G-Tech showed an 11.4. Used it on the 427 and got a 9.7, but in the real world on a track I would not be able to do that good. On the G-Tech all you need to do is nail it in 2nd gear to generate the G's that the computer along with the built in GPS will crunch your numbers. Probably the best launch I could get from a standing start would be in 2nd with some clutch slipping off the line. Off the line in 1st, too easy to smoke, plus I would be short shifting anyways. If I get on it in 2nd at around 2500, the power is low enough at that rpm that I hook up and don't start losing traction till 60+ mph at about 4500 rpm, so either back pedal or short shift again.

Looks and sounds like you have a bit of a traction issue too.

Scott knows how to build a mouse up pretty good for 91 octane pump gas and a decent idle.


Not that most here would care, but the 355 got 12 mpg till I recurved the distributor and up graded to electronic ignition, getting it up to 16 mpg. The 383 with the tall gears of the Tremec gave mid 20's and on a couple of trips broke 30 mpg. The 427 has me back to 12 mpg.

I know what you mean about catching up on sleep. I'm officially on vacation now, and for me, going to bed early and sleeping all night is a luxury.

Your gas mileage will probably improve when the novelty of more ooomph under your foot wears off a little.
